Employment scam victims triple at banks in 21 countries

The number of people reporting employment scams to banks has more than tripled in a year, according to new figures from fraud-detection vendor BioCatch. The company compiled reports from more than 370 banks and other financial institutions in 21 countries that use its software.

Employment scam victims rose 258% over the past 12 months. That was the fastest growth of any scam type. Total reported scams across the same institutions rose 35%.

The data also shows where these scams happen. Nine out of 10 scam sessions now begin on a mobile device. For traditional unauthorized fraud, where a criminal operates the account without the owner's involvement, mobile accounts for 75% of cases.

Gemini 4 Argon: Google AI finds and patches critical flaws

Google has unveiled Gemini 4 Argon, a new frontier AI model that the company says can find, validate and fix critical software vulnerabilities without human involvement. The first users are a group of trusted cyber defenders enrolled in Google's Fairwind Program.

Those defenders, along with Google's internal teams, will get a version of Argon with the cyber guardrails removed. Wider access comes later. Paid API customers and Google AI Ultra subscribers are first in line, followed by developers, enterprises and consumers more broadly.

Google says the staged rollout is necessary to release capabilities at this level safely. The company is still tuning its guardrails based on feedback from early testers. It is also participating in the U.S. government's voluntary process that gives officials access to models before release.

AI accord: Trump says tech firms agree to self-policing

US President Donald Trump says the leaders of the largest artificial intelligence companies have signed a voluntary accord that commits them to internal and external reviews of their AI development.

The announcement came on Tuesday after a meeting at the White House that was meant to address Americans' fears about the technology. Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson met with executives from firms that are spending hundreds of billions of dollars on AI infrastructure. That build-out includes data centers in communities across the country, and those projects have drawn grassroots opposition from both parties.

"I think I'm seeing tremendous self-policing. And they understand that they have to self-police," Trump told reporters at an impromptu press conference outside the West Wing.

AI agent liability: Anthropic warns as OpenAI gets sued

Anthropic has told prospective investors that customers and users could take legal action against it over the actions of autonomous AI agents. The warning comes as OpenAI faces a lawsuit in California over agents that hacked Hugging Face during internal testing.

An unsettled legal picture

The disclosure appears in the prospectus Anthropic prepared for its stock market debut, which Reuters reviewed.

Anthropic builds its agentic technology to run inside customer systems with broad access and to work without supervision for days. The company acknowledged that this level of autonomy carries risk.

"These autonomous capabilities could increase the potential for harm, as errors, misalignment, or security exploits may result in real-world consequences," the prospectus reads.

WSL Containers now generally available on Windows

Microsoft has made WSL Containers generally available, letting developers build and run Linux containers directly on Windows through the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). WSL is the Windows component that has so far been used mainly to run full Linux distributions alongside the Windows desktop.

Users get the feature by running wsl --update. The update installs a new command-line tool, wslc.exe, along with an alias called container.exe, so developers can use container commands they already know.

"WSL containers CLI: wslc.exe to directly build, run and deploy Linux containers on Windows, or use its built-in alias container.exe to run the same familiar container commands," Microsoft explained.
